Captain Smash

Hailing from the hills of Huddersfield, Captain Smash is relatively new to the DJ scene.

For many years you’ll have been able to find Captain Smash left-side of a dancefloor or at a festival, decked out in funky festival wear or fancy dress, shaking his hips and busting out some energetic moves with a huge grin on his face. After watching hundreds of DJs and bands play his favourite tunes and whip the crowd into a frenzy he decided to have a go himself and put his expansive musical knowledge to good use, in his words, “so I could play the music that I wanted to hear!”

Inspired by the likes of the hugely-talented Emma Clair, Varrick Frost, Bart & Baker, Duke Skellington and Dutty Moonshine, having followed them ever since he stumbled upon and fell in love with electro-swing, Captain Smash chose to dive into this scene that he is so passionate about. In under a year he taught himself to mix and even recorded a few mixes that he then posted on Soundcloud, which have gained a phenomenal response! Many people are still new to electro-swing and Captain Smash’s enthusiasm for sharing the genre, as well as his truly humble nature and genuine thirst for feedback in order to improve, has secured him solid support. He was offered the incredible honour of a debut set at the successful Manchester-based electro-swing night, Prohibition, a night he looks up to and thoroughly respects. The feedback from that set in Prohibitions own words:

“New chap on the block, Captain Smash quite frankly smashed his debut set at our Neon Rave earlier this year, so we had to ask him back! His energy and enthusiasm is infectious! Expect to hear all your favourite Electro Swing bangers from Jamie Berry to Parov Stelar, the Captain has them all!”

Ask the Captain himself how he’s done so well so soon and he’ll giggle, then with a mischievous grin he’ll tell you, “I really don’t know! But I’m absolutely loving it!”

His tune selection is impossible to stand still to, his mixes are fun-packed and uplifting, and his energy is infectious – you cannot miss him behind the decks, jumping around and waving his arms in the air, tipping his captain hat to the crowd and engaging them throughout his set. He’s the life and soul of the party and it’s clear to see that he’s enjoying his new-found talent. Long may it continue!
