Captain, this is the Electro Swing answer of the viral Sea Shanty “Wellerman”.The Cape Town based producer and DJ Betty Booom is back with an awesome booom down the sea again! “Soon May the Wellerman Come”, also known as “Wellerman” is a well-known whaling song from 1870, but the songwriter is unknown. Betty Booom has finally brought this traditional into a Swing House version and Ashley Slater from UK added a whole Seemans choir with his vocals skills! #Wellerman
Originating in New Zealand, the song frequently refers to the “wellermen”, supply ships owned by the Weller Brothers. The song’s content has drawn academic praise as “a genuine cultural expression by exploited workers for whom “sugar and tea and rum” provided a much-needed respite from the drudgery and toil of their daily lives”.
In 2020 and 2021, versions by British folk music group the Longest Johns and Scottish musician Nathan Evans became unlikely viral hits on the social media site TikTok, leading to a “social media craze” around “sea shanties“!
